Annecy - June 17th
Annecy is about 30 miles south of Geneva, Switzerland. We stopped there for lunch and a quick walkabout with Emmanuel on our way from La Ferrière to Thoiry.
The Palais de l'Isle
A 12th century castle on an island in the river Thiou in Annecy's administrative headquarters. It mostly served as a prison and courthouse until the French Revolution. It again was a prison during World War II. The Palais de l'Ile was classified as a Historical Monument in 1900, and today houses a local history museum.
Women's World Cup Poster
Not really a fan of this poster. It's clever, but perhaps focuses a bit too much on aspects other than soccer skills. It's tricky and interesting. There were a lot of people commenting on, and objecting to women playing in the tournament and wearing make-up. The NYT had a great article on this. The women made a great argument that their image is their brand and that their brand is what can make them more money. The men clearly pay attention to how they look, so why not the women? A great summary by one of the women was, "Don't you dress up when you go to work?". And, of course, let's not forget that if the women weren't looking good, the internet would be all over them for that too!
