Nice - Antibes, June 12th
We took the train 40 minutes south of Nice to visit Antibes. It started as Antipolis, a Greek settlement, in the 4th century BC. The Romans showed up later and did their usual things... building roads, aqueducts, etc. After the fall of the Romans, Antibes was trashed by various barbarian tribes. It was eventually protected with walls and became part of France by the end of the 15th century, under the protection of King Louis XI.

Fort Carré is a 16th-century star-shaped fort of four arrow-head shaped bastions. In 1565, Henry III had 4 bastions added to an existing tower to create the fort.
During the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte was briefly imprisoned here. In July 1794, after the violent overthrow of Robespierre, General Bonaparte was detained as a Jacobin sympathizer and held in Fort Carré for ten days. His friend and political ally, Antoine Christophe Saliceti, secured his release.
