Orange, France - June 8th to 9th
We stopped in Orange for a night on our way to Nice, and discovered that we really liked it. Orange was a very important city in its day. Roman Orange was founded in 35 BC by veterans of the Roman second legion as Arausio (after the local Celtic water god). The name was originally unrelated to that of the orange fruit, but was later conflated with it. Orange of 2,000 years ago was a miniature Rome.
The city is renowned for it's Roman architecture, including the Triumphal Arch of Orange, and a Roman theatre, the Théâtre antique d'Orange, which is the best preserved Roman theatre in Europe.

Théâtre Antique D'Orange
From the ground floor, looking up at the rows of seats. The theater could hold 10,000 people and often did. The Romans held plays on a regular basis and the entire town was invited, although the seating was strictly partitioned based on your social class. They also had handy rooms behind the seats for buying beer and wine and getting out of the heat.
